Looking
northeast at the Vermillion Cliffs, northern Arizona. It is one of the areas where
zoo-raised California Condors have been released to establish colonies in the
wild. On the other side of the cliffs from here, around that point at the right,
is the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam (that creates Lake Powell) and a nearly
no-town Navajo restaurant that serves good and plenty.
At our backs is
the road that leads to a fork where you can choose between our right, south toward
the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (which we did after
taking this photo) and straight or northwest, toward Kanab, Utah. That's one of
the well-known Western movie-making sites, and gateway to the new Grand Staircase/Escalante
monument/park.
