13   Klein, Gene - Just a passing wonder: is there any connection with San Diego Chargers owner, Gene Klein?

 19   Sell, Louis
- The racing dentist who sustained serious injuries in a racing accident at Riverside, spent time in the same hospital where I visited Bill Atkinson after he was run down by Bruce McLaren, and who left a legacy of tales with the staff there.

 29   Putnam, George
- Same name as a Los Angeles newscaster of the era.

54   Douglas, Jack - Humorist, comic, network talk-show guest.

A. Tracy Bird, 1916-2002 By: Richard James

Tustin, Calif., July 25 Tracy Bird, one of the Sports Car Club of America’s legendary and most respected figures, passed away last week in Tucson, Ariz. at the age of 86. Bird’s contributions to the Club in his 50 years of membership include serving as the Club’s executive director. In recognition of his many years of service to the Club in a variety of duties, he was awarded the Club’s highest award, the Woolf Barnato Trophy (now the Carl Haas Cup) in 1963.

"No one has played a greater role in the shaping of today's SCCA than Tracy Bird" says SCCA Historian Peter Hylton.

Bird’s interest in cars began with a hot-rodded Model A, then blossomed into midgets and sprint cars. His love of sports car racing began with an MGTD and his race cars included an XK Jaguar, several Porsches and a Ferrari-Maserati. He and his wife Kay also rallied in a Ferrari 250GT.

He started in the Los Angeles Region of SCCA in 1951 and then helped found the Arizona Region in 1953. He began serving on SCCA’s Board of Governors in 1958, was chairman in 1960 and was director of ACCUS-FIA in 1961-’63. He was also chairman of the Competition Board and the Court of Appeals. His SCCA career culminated in his four-year service as executive director of SCCA, which ended in 1973, although he continued to play an active role in the Club for many years.

95   Oker, Bob - Accomplished driver of many cars, makes numerous appearances on this site.

101   Morrow, Harry - Owner of that famous Los Angeles motor books store and a founder/developer of Willow Springs Raceway.

118   LeMay, Alan
- Author of the novel upon which the best Western movie of all time was based: The Searchers.

121   Geraghty, Steve
- Another wondering: is he connected to the Victory Boulevard Geraghty's Dyno-Tune shop who wrung another ten percent horsepower out of my one-barrel Vega motor in 1971?

164   Doheny, Bill
- Oil money, if I'm not mistaken, with the family name on several impressive USC installations.

221   Evans, Art
- Esteemed Fabulous Fifties linchpin, educator, and author of books on the racers and tracks of the Southern California 1950s, among others.

Pit & Grid Steward   Carlyle Blackwell
- You'll no doubt recognize him as driver of the D-Type Jaguar, bottom-lit cover photo of I-forget-which sports car magazine of the era.
