| I'm still not really clear on where Turn 5 begins and ends. I thought it was that bend to the left leading to the uphill and Turn Six's two right-handers. That leaves this bent piece of road between Four and "Five" without a name. This uphill to the first apex at six is a good passing place, if the driver in front tries to take his optimum left-to-right curved line for speed (which we are doing here). You can brake late and straight on his right to get in front of him. Even if it ruins your line, he can't drive through you, and you are both at the same speed coming out. But you are ahead. |

I have not included a shot of the second apex at Six. I missed it on this lap, according to the evidence. The lap was timed for the Solo I competition, and is on film from beginning to end, so you could time it with a stopwatch.
Here's the beginning of that wonderful braking area I described at "Turn 7, Riverside, 1974." Click THIS picture to see it. In the upper right corner you can see a white barrier that was not there when I stood flag duty here as pictured in "at Play on Riverside Raceway." Click the NEXT picture to see it. Riverside -1- |

At 90-95 mph, looking through Turn 5, with Turn 6 at the upper left. In another second or two the car would be at the location of the exterior shot at "Vega Kammback on the tracks." Take the link from the bottom left of "RIR -1-." Or click the picture. Very large in this picture, and in the mind of drivers, is that outside wall. Many a quality effort has ended against it. I am told the MGB roadster featured on another page flattened its left side there a month or so after I sold it. Somewhere I have a film of an Alfa coupe driver stretching his shoulder harness there, in slow motion. | |

Looking down a hill to the uphill entrance at Turn Seven. This is the short straight along which a naked lady trudged, nearly delaying the start of a Can-Am race. There were plenty of volunteers in the posse that captured her.
Here we are at or just before the location of the photo showing the coupe turning in. From here on, it's a real challenge to stay on the track. If you are going too slow, the chances are it's WAY too slow. Just a little too fast, and there's the dirt. Flag station to your right, behind the barrier. Wusses. |
